I've flown from Slide Mountain, Kingsbury Grade, and a few other random hike up spots.

It’s also the best way to learn how to keep the glider open and untangled with low risk. Kiting is a fun activity in itself that I imagine isn’t quite as engaging with a hang glider. And I’ve been in some fairly strong conditions, like midday summer in the sierras. I’ve had some deflations, but they’ve so far reopened without the glider turning at all or losing noticeable height. You certainly need to learn properly and practice your kiting skills, but I’ve never experienced a deflation that has altered my direction of travel in my first 200 hours of flight time. Modern beginner and intermediate paragliders are so good and staying inflated and reopening quickly. Paraglider pilots can decide to hike up the hill, send out a group message to see if anyone wants to join, but do the hike regardless and get in a post or pre work flight whenever.

I only see paraglider pilots doing weekday flights around where I am, whereas the hang gliders need multiple people to commit together to get a group driving up the hill (which makes it a full weekend day kind of activity).

I’m also biased as well but I think the overall convenience of paragliding makes it the better choice. Somebody you're flying with will have a truck to get up the hill with your glider. You can get a glider on any roof rack by using a ladder to provide support along the glider. Transporting a hang glider is not as bad as you might think too. Hang gliding can also take much stronger conditions than paragliding, which is useful when you want to fly in the big air sites found in most mountain ranges. Used beginner hang gliders are typically $500-$2000 depending on how old the wing is, I don't know the numbers for paragliders. You'll need to resail your hang glider every 40 years or so, the one I'm flying still has its original sail from 1994.

Hang gliders need some maintenance too, but most of it is just checking that nothing has been mildly damaged. Paragliding equipment generally needs to undergo major maintenance every 4 years or so as the lines wear over time. No, but keep in mind that you can always learn both eventually. No matter which route you go you really cant go wrong as flying is THE BEST But the honest fact is both aspects of flying (hg and pg) have their seperate issues when it comes to safe piloting. I personally will always feel safer flying a hg. My paragliding harness is off the shelf and feels like I am in a barkalounger at a fraction of the cost of a hg harness. cost 3,000 USD its ok from a comfort standpoint but i still have hot spots when I fly for a long time. Set up time/breakdown compared to a HG is a joke. I have 3 different size wings for what I feel like doing on a partiular day, and they are easy as hell to transport and store. It is soo much more convienient and simple. I have thousands of hours in a hangglider. In my dreams I would fly like superman and for me hanggliding is the closest thing to that. can you help alleviate my fear of collapses, tangles, and other things that don't happen with a rigid wing? It seems like Paragliding has a lower initial expense, but the equipment will need replacement and service more often?)ģ.) For the paraglider people. Having done a lot of beach lessons on a hang glider, my plan is to go take a weekend course on paragliders, then arrange for separate tandems both with a hang glider and a paraglider before I make a final choice on what I'm diving into (first?)ġ.) Is this a stupid way of going about it/Is there a better way to approach this decision?Ģ.) What should I know before I go/What factors should I consider to help me make a more informed decision? (budget factors about both would be really useful here. I want to get in the air really bad, and don't see general aviation in my immediate financial future, and find freeflight to be, personally for me, more beautiful if less practical. I took some hang gliding lessons years ago, but due to family stuff and finances dropped out.
